Rio has two of the most popular beaches in the world: Copacabana and Ipanema. So, if you are visiting Rio during the high season you have to be prepared to find a huge crowd sunbathing in both these places (you might even struggle to find a spot for your beach towel).
It is truly fascinating if you consider that Copacabana beach has more than 2.5 miles of sand. It also offers a wide range of sports activities and the city has great hotels, restaurants, and nightclubs.
Remember that the city of Rio de Janeiro is not exactly known to be the safest place in the world for tourists – so take all the necessary precautions to avoid major problems.
Ipanema beach became worldwide famous thanks to the magnificent song “The Girl From Ipanema” –written by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraisin 1962 that won a Grammy three years later (the English version was written by Norman Gimbel).
You probably know this entire song by heart because you have heard it a thousand times through the voice of Mr. Frank Sinatra:
“Oh, but I watch her so sadly
How can I tell her I love her
Yes, I would give my heart gladly
But each day as she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at me
Tall and tan and young and lovely
The Ipanema beach is located in the rich part of the city and just like the Copacabana beach, it also offers all kinds of activities to its visitors. These beaches are great for travelers who enjoy urban beaches, nightlife, and meeting new people.
Lastly,Ilha Grande is a place that will certainly appeal to adventurous travelers. It is a small island located between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo with lots of hiking trails, waterfalls, and secluded beaches. It is perfect if you want to explore a remote location and get away from the crowds of Rio.
