Who said you couldn’t go to the beach during wintertime? Beaches are great environments to go for a walk, go on dates, and even do amazing photo shoots and other activities! Obviously that activities such as swimming or tanning work better during the hot weather, but beaches are equally as beautiful during winter as they are during the summer. So, whether you’re a beach lover or you’re just curious about new travel destinations, here we present to you the top 8 beaches you should visit this winter!

1. Mavericks Beach, Half Moon Bay, California

If you’re into surfing and big waves, then this beautiful beach will be a great place to spend a winter day at. If you’re from San Francisco or near, it only takes about one hour’s drive to get there. Besides that, Mavericks Beach hosts a surfing competition every year, which goes by the name of “Titans of Mavericks.” However, because this competition depends a lot on weather conditions, the dates can change, and you’ll need to plan things to see the event. If you’re not a fan of surfing competitions, it’s still a great place to go for a walk, especially if you enjoy watching big waves from high viewpoints!

2. Black sand beach, Iceland

Before you ask, yes, the sand is black. This happens because Iceland has many volcanos, approximately around 130, and some are still active nowadays. Volcanic ashes are the cause for black sand beaches; whenever the molten lava touches the water, there’s a violent reaction that makes the lava transform into black sand in a matter of seconds. This makes the Back Sand beach in Iceland, a volcanic beach. But don’t worry, the beach is safe to visit, and during winter, it looks even more beautiful, in our opinion. Besides, if you decide to visit Iceland during this time of the year, you’ll also be able to see all the northern lights, which are easier to see from October to February.

3. Tofino, British Columbia, Canada

If you love to see mother nature in action, visiting Tofino during the stormy season can be super exciting! Every year, from November to February, many locals and tourists go to Tofino to watch the storms and the power they have when in contact with water. These storms can bring in amazing big swells and powerful winds that could make you feel scared yet amazed. If you’re feeling brave, go to Long Beach or if you want to enjoy the view while drinking a warm cup of coffee in a comfortable, warm environment, consider staying at one of the storm-proof hotels such as the Middle Beach Lodge.
