The primary goal to use this building as a residence for the Ross MacKenzie family, owner of the Singer Sewing Machine company. Over the years, this space has undergone a series of transformations, but ghosts’ reports are quite frequent since the beginning. Guests claim to hear an organ playing, even though there is no organ on the hotel premises. Others say they hear children playing and talking and claim to have seen a woman in white wandering around the hotel rooms.

The story goes that a maid was murdered in the building and that her spirit never left the hotel. The Willard Intercontinental has over 200 years of history. Within its walls, Martin Luther King Junior wrote his famous speech “I Have a Dream.” Before opening, this hotel also served as home to President Abraham Lincoln. This guesthouse was the favorite location of President Ulysses S. Grant, and many say that his spirit still inhabits the hotel until this day.
