Let ’s admit it! Long-haul flights can be a real nightmare! They are definitely not fun at all and no one enjoys them. I mean just think about how stressful it is to spend hours flying between the heavens and earth while uncomfortably sitting in a small and enclosed space.
Besides in addition to the fact that long-haul flight is stressful, they can also be deadly boring! And guess what? You are definitely not the only one who experience this but pilots too! However, pilots are smart and that’s because they have found many fun and interesting ways to cope with their boredom to survive long-haul flights.
Many pilots love to challenge their mind and stimulate them to constantly work and think. Hence, they choose to spend their in-air downtime playing mind challenging games like crosswords and Sudoku puzzles.
Most of the long-haul pilots admit that these mind challenging games are less distracting than watching a movie or reading a book.’’They won’t pull you for too long’’, they claim.
Study For School
This might be the weirdest and the most unexpected thing to hear, but yes, pilots feel guilty about the time wasted in the airplanes and decided to do something about it!
So, instead of breaking the boredom and watch Adam Sandler movies or simply flipping through useless magazines, they choose to get studying done!
One pilot has said that one of his colleagues have actually learned quantum physics during his several transatlantic flights between the United Kingdom and South America.
You might have heard many pilots saying that they are not allowed to read while onboard but guess what this is not true! A pilot even confessed he is never patient enough to sit down and enjoy a good read whilst on the ground! He added saying that the reading experience is more fun and enjoyable when he is up on the air!
Learn A Foreign Language
Many pilots take advantage of the time they spend onboard to learn a new foreign language and enhance their communication skills. For instance, pilots on online forums admit they learned how to speak Hindu and Mandarin while on a long-haul flight.
While some pilots choose to read and learn new things, others prefer to take a short nap to survive the long-haul flight boredom. There are some large airplanes that come fully equipped with secret sleeping quarters.
These can be found right over the first class cabin and come with a private bedroom and a TV. However, this is not the case of every airplane out there!
Listen To Radio
Normally, the automatic direction finding is designed to be used as an aid to navigation but bored pilots use it as a radio to survive the long haul flights and more particularly the long night flights. They would pick anything that triggers their attention and simply enjoy listening, especially when they have no one to talk to!
Unlike other passengers on the flight, pilots have more privacy in the cockpit! They can listen to their favorite songs and sing them out loud, which is a cool way to kill boredom.
Besides, when you are alone in the cockpit, you don’t have to care about your ugly voice, admitted a pilot. Still, make sure you don’t have a stuck mic before you start your secret audition.
We are all aware of the fact that airline food has a questionable quality and the quality of the food served to passengers is not as that served to pilots. This is simply because airlines can’t risk the pilots’ lives. That’s not everything!
The pilot and copilot don’t get the same food for the same former reason. While the first is served the first class meal, the latter is served the business class meal.
You are not the only one addicted to taking selfies! Pilots do this often even if it’s totally against the FAA regulations. However, keep in mind that the pilot selfies happen according to an alarming regularity.
In 2014, a fatal plane crash took place when the pilots were busy taking some self-photographs with their mobile phones. Don’t freak out if you notice a pilot posting a selfie on their Instagram page! In most cases, the posted mid-air selfies are photoshopped!
Gaze Out The Window
If you have been in a long haul flight before, you can totally relate! At the end of the day, pilots are humans too and they can feel bored when flying for too long. So, to break the boredom, they would look out of the window and gaze at the clouds trying to figure out how bad or good is the weather ahead!
