The suicide rate among teenagers is also a huge problem in this city. Since 2009, there has been an 81% increase in child suicides in the greater Tucson area. Government entities believe that these figures are directly related to drug and alcohol abuse, mental health disorders, bullying, and easy access to guns. But that is not the only segment of the population that governors have to worry about. Suicides among senior citizens (65 or older) are also on the rise in Tucson, making elderly white men in specific highly vulnerable. Suicide deaths per year: 25 per 100 thousand people.
4. Sacramento, California
Sacramento is not exactly one of the worst cities to live in. It is the capital city of California, one of the richest and most powerful states of all the United States of America, with top-notch education, health care facilities, and a highly educated and multicultural workforce. So, why is the suicide rate high? Well, it’s not clear. But the high unemployment rate combined with a high cost of living can put a lot of people under great financial stress – and it could be a reasonable explanation. Suicide deaths per year: 22.7 per 100 thousand people.
5. Albuquerque, New Mexico
The state of New Mexico was the one with the highest number of suicides in 2018, with a total amount of 536. Just like in Tucson, a considerable percentage of all suicides in Albuquerque occur among senior citizens. It’s also worth mentioning that three-quarters of suicide victims in New Mexico were male. Suicide deaths per year: 21 per 100 thousand people.
6. Mesa, Arizona
It seems that Arizona is struggling to control suicide rates in many of its cities. Mesa is the third-largest city in the state, and it has one of the worst suicide rates in the entire country. There is so much that needs to be done when it comes to suicide prevention and mental health awareness in Arizona. Let’s hope that the institutions that can have a decisive impact start acting quickly. Suicide deaths per year: 19.6 per 100 thousand people.
